Painter, decorative and stained glass artist and teacher, born in Birmingham. He studied art there and in London, winning several medals. Taught for a time at Armstrong College in Newcastle upon Tyne, then assumed control of Ipswich Art School, 1906–29, where he was considered an enlightened principal. He was a member of RBSA, RI and RBA and was a prolific exhibitor, also showing at Fine Art Society, RA, Brook Street Art Gallery and Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. Rushton completed a number of large, decorative projects which led to his being illustrated in architectural publications. Cinemas in Blackpool, Ipswich, Oxford, Slough and Southampton commissioned his work and he finished a big scheme for McGill University, Montreal, Canada. Public galleries in Ipswich and Newcastle upon Tyne hold examples.
