Painter in watercolour and oil, born in Cardiff, where he studied at the College of Art, teachers including the watercolourist John Roberts and David Tinker. In 1972 he opened a studio gallery in St Davids, Pembrokeshire, and the west Wales landscape was a key feature of his work. This could be realistic or have a mystical, dreamlike quality. In 1979 Roberts’ pictures were featured in the BBC2 feature Christmas in Saint Davids, which he also narrated. Roberts gained a WAC grant in 1983 to paint in Morocco, and the exhibition Journey in Morocco toured from WAC in Cardiff. In 1991–2 Henry Thomas Gallery, Carmarthenshire College of Technology and Art, toured a retrospective of Roberts’ pictures. WAC and other public collections hold examples.
