Sculptor, born in Holderness, Yorkshire, who early became intrigued by shells and fossils in local gravel pits, eventually obtaining a degree in geology at Manchester University, 1968–71. After working briefly as a trainee geophysicist and realising that career and security were for him not priorities, Renshaw led a transient life. He laboured mainly in the construction industry, funding his interest in rock climbing and mountaineering, from 1979–87 making expeditions to K2, Everest and China. Having begun to teach himself wood-carving, in 1992 Renshaw was commissioned to make an oak sculpture for Ebbw Vale Garden Festival. He developed an interest in contemporary art and was deeply impressed by Henry Moore’s ninetieth-birthday show at RA in 1988.
