
Painter, born in Deriwala in what is now Sri Lanka, whose art training initially was with Harry Pieris. He emerged as a leading figure in Sri Lankan art circles after World War II, being a founder-member of the 43 Group of painters, set up to show independent work. A government scholarship took him to London in 1946 to study at the Anglo-French Centre. Although he returned to Sri Lanka in 1949, he was back in England in 1953, settling eventually in Southend-on-Sea, Essex. He continued to show widely in England and Sri Lanka, including AIA, South London Art Gallery, Bear Lane Gallery in Oxford, having solo shows at Commonwealth Institute in 1966; Newman Room, Oxford, 1979; and Grayshott Art Gallery, 1980. Imperial War Museum, Victoria & Albert Museum and galleries abroad hold his work.
