Artist and teacher who trained at Winchester School of Art, Royal College of Art and Goldsmiths’ College School of Art. After being principal of Ryland Memorial School, an art school in West Bromwich, in 1949 Norman took over from Richard Ray as principal of Sunderland School, shortly to become College, of Art, eventually taking up a similar post at Liverpool Regional College of Art. Norman exhibited in the north of England and was included in an exhibition connected with the local College at Sunderland Museum and Art Gallery in 1995. It has one oil by him, Wear Tugs, of 1954. A tall, upright figure, Norman was known in Sunderland as The Captain.
