Margaret Dorothy Nicholson [also known as Dorothy Nicholson, and as Margaret Nicholson] was born in Croydon, Surrey, England on 27 February 1886 and was the daughter of William Nicholson, a journalist. She studied at Dublin Metropolitan School of Art. A photograph of a lace cover in Carrickmacross lace designed by her whilst a student at the DMS School of Art is illustrated in Arts & Crafts. A Review of the Work executed by Students in the leading Art Schools of Great Britain and Ireland. Edited by Charles Holme (London: The Studio Ltd., 1916 p. 194) She subsequently returned to England where she initially worked as an embroiderer. Examples of her work in this field were shown in the 10th exhibition of the Arts & Crafts Exhibition Society at the Grosvenor Gallery in London in 1912.
