Designer, painter and illustrator, born in Dorchester, Dorset, who studied at Lambeth School of Art, then Central School of Arts and Crafts, etching with Luke Taylor. He went on to become a member of Art Workers’ Guild from 1912, was one of its committee, 1917–19, and its honorary secretary, 1936–48. Designed commemorative stamp for the British Empire Exhibition in 1924 and the £1 Postal Congress Commemorative Stamp, 1929. He was an expert designer of bookplates, Harold Nelson: His Book of Book-Plates, 1904, being one of a number of volumes appraising them. W H Thoms’ three-volume Early English Prose Romances, 1903, was one of several books illustrated by Nelson, whose work also appeared in magazines including The Bookplate, The Graphic and Sphere.
