(b ?Haarlem, c.1475; d Haarlem, 1555/6). Netherlandish painter. He worked mainly in Haarlem and the influence of Geertgen tot Sint Jans can clearly be seen in his rather stiff and gangling figures. Most of his paintings are religious works or portraits (for a period of unknown duration, probably c.1516–26, he worked as court portraitist to Margaret of Austria, Regent of the Netherlands; see Habsburg). However, his most remarkable painting is ‘West Indies Landscape’ (c.1545, Frans Hals Mus., Haarlem), which is now thought to represent New Mexico.
