Stage designer and painter, born in Oxfordshire. Was so precocious at drawing that her parents sent her to art classes from age of six. Began selling work to Good Housekeeping, Tatler and Illustrated London News, and aged 18 studied at Chelsea Illustrators school, where she met Sophie and Margaret (Percy) Harris. They began to design for the theatre and formed Motley, the leading stage designer of the 1930s and beyond. In New York after World War II Montgomery was responsible for the costumes for the musicals South Pacific, Oklahoma!, Can Can and Paint Your Wagon and worked for the Metropolitan Opera House. Settled in England from 1966, then from mid-1970s decided to concentrate on her painting. Her portraits included John Gielgud, Peggy Ashcroft and Edith Evans, as well as stage personalities in America.
