Painter and teacher, born in Aspatria, Cumberland. He studied at Liverpool School of Art, then at Royal Academy Schools, 1921–5, under Charles Sims and Ernest Jackson, winning a gold medal in 1925. A travelling scholarship took him to France, Italy and Spain the following year. He was principal of the St John’s Wood Art Schools, 1931–8, taught at Shoreditch Training College, 1944–50, then served as headmaster of Regent Street Polytechnic. Published the Students’ Book of Life Drawing, 1938. Exhibited extensively at RBA, also at RA, LG, NS and NEAC. Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight, holds his work. Retrospective show at Christopher Hull Gallery in 1987. Lived in London.
