(b Nantes, 24 June 1883; d Paris, 3 Nov. 1956). French painter and writer on art. After passing through Neo-Impressionist and Fauvist phases he became one of the earliest devotees of Cubism and a central figure of the Section d'Or group. However, he is remembered less for his paintings than as the co-author with Gleizes of Du Cubisme (1912), the first book to be published on the movement.
