Painter and teacher who left school at 15 and worked seven years at Burntisland Shipbuilding, Fife, serving a five-year apprenticeship, entering Edinburgh College of Art, 1961–5, on the strength of his portfolio. He had been a shop steward, chairman of a strike committee and was an active Socialist. Also studied at Regent Road Institute of Further Education, Edinburgh, 1965–6, and at Moray House College of Education, 1966–7. From 1990 taught at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee. He was elected a professional member of SSA in 1968. Had a solo show at New 57 Gallery, Edinburgh, 1970. McLeod was included in the 1971 Scottish Realism show of Scottish Arts Council, which holds examples. He was then described as “a balanced erotic classicist” and was noted as a polished craftsman.
