Painter, born in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, who continued to live in that county while working in London. He studied at Goldsmiths’ College, 1992–6. Group shows included Zeit, Cantaloupe, 1998; SCD-008, Platform, 1999; and Saatchi Gift, Mappin Art Gallery, Sheffield, and Haunted by Happiness, Jerwood Space, both 2000. McLean had a solo exhibition at Galleri Christian Dam, Oslo, Norway, 1999, and Galleri Christian Dam, Copenhagen, Denmark, 2000. From the mid-1990s, he scrutinised, photographed, sketched and painted the same two pretty, young, beguiling and hypnotic girls repeatedly. Saatchi and Hayward Gallery/Arts Council collections; Ulster Museum, Belfast; New Art Gallery, Walsall; and Trondheim Kunstforening, Norway, all hold examples.
