Illustrator and painter, born in Kingston upon Thames, Surrey, where he died. Studied at Goldsmiths’ College School of Art, after Army service in Germany, his notable teacher being Edmund J Sullivan. Mays followed in the tradition of versatile black-and-white men, going on to draw for magazines such as Punch and John Bull as well as Royle Publications. His speciality was family life, with his own family as models. Mays was a reclusive, reflective man who later in life made thoughtful studies in oil, shown at RA.
