Painter whose work has a naïve charm, sometimes with fantastic elements, born in Brody, Russia, near Lvov and the Polish border. Moved to Antwerp, Belgium, around the start of World War I, settling in England in 1940. He began painting 10 years later. Maurer wrote that “only my dear wife understood and encouraged me, and after she died in 1962 I was unable to touch a brush for many months … Then suddenly I woke up in a paradise of painting and through it have found rest, consolation, relaxation and inner satisfaction.” As well as Britain, Maurer showed widely abroad. Had a solo show at St George’s Gallery, 1956; Ben Uri Art Society, which holds his work, 1957; and Mercury Gallery, 1970 and 1971. Died in London.
