Painter, born in Duston, Northamptonshire. He began painting when he was about eight years old, encouraged by the Northampton watercolourist T L Shoosmith. Had a nautical education and in World War I served in Army and Royal Flying Corps, then qualified as an architect in the early 1920s. In 1923 went to Paris where he studied at the Académie Moderne, his teachers including Fernand Léger and Othon Friesz, and became interested in modern European art. In 1939 he settled in Northampton, where he lived until his death. Mathews was a member of the Chelsea Arts Club and he was a president of NS and an honorary secretary of ROI. He held a one-man show in Northampton in 1972 and his last major exhibition was held at Mall Galleries, London, in 1973.
