Illustrator, designer and painter, born in Purley, Surrey. He attended St Albans School of Art, 1945–8; Regent Street Polytechnic, 1949–51; and London School of Printing & Graphic Art, 1951–2; his tutors included Christopher Sanders, Raymond Sheppard and Henry Trevick. After serving with the Air Ministry Design Unit/National Service, 1949–51, Maddox worked as an art director with London advertising agencies, 1953–62, then freelanced. Between 1972–89 carried out stamp designs for the Post Office. He was elected a member of the Society of Industrial Artists & Designers in 1956 and RI in 1959, in 1989 becoming its president, was a member of PS and a fellow of Chartered Society of Designers. Maddox won the Winsor & Newton/RI 150th Anniversary Award in 1981 and the Members’ Award in 1991 and was a Hunting Group Finalist several times.
