French painter and graphic artist. He was a friend of *Signac and like him an exponent of *Neo-Impressionism, although he was less rigid in his interpretation of its doctrines. His main subjects were landscape and townscape (especially of industrial areas). He was a fairly minor painter, but he is noteworthy for helping to popularize Neo-Impressionism outside France, particularly in Belgium (he exhibited with Les Vingt and La *Libre Esthétique). There is a museum of his work at Mantes-la-Jolie.
