Painter, draughtsman and teacher, born in Inverkeithing, Fife. Leishman graduated from Edinburgh College of Art, a member of the notable generation which included Alan Davie, William Gear and Robin Philipson. After war service, 1940–6, in the Army Leishman taught in Germany, Edinburgh, Fife and Dundee, but in 1972 gave up teaching to paint full-time. He was elected SSA and RSW and won the May Marshall Brown Award in 1987. Showed widely in Scottish group shows and his solo exhibitions included McClure Gallery, Glasgow, several at the Scottish Gallery in Edinburgh, a retrospective at Roseangle Gallery, Dundee, in 1981, and William Hardie Gallery, Glasgow, in 1990. Work held by Scottish Arts Council, Dundee City Art Gallery and elsewhere. Leishman’s pictures are colourful, imaginative and witty, a reflection of the artist’s own character.
