Painter, draughtsman, printmaker and teacher, born in Swansea, who was especially associated with portraits of his friend the poet Dylan Thomas; National Museum of Wales, Cardiff, holds a fine example, of 1934. Janes attended Cardiff School of Art, then Royal Academy Schools. From 1936–40 taught at Swansea School, then after military service returned to Swansea College of Art, 1946–63, later teaching at Croydon College of Art. He was a founder-member of SWG, showed at Mayor, St George’s and Redfern Galleries, widely with WAC and CASW and took part in Dylan Thomas Country at Upper Grosvenor Galleries, 1971. WAC gave him a retrospective, with tour, 1974, Attic Gallery, Swansea, one in 1995, with a memorial at Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Swansea, 1999–00.
