Artist who studied at Wolverhampton Polytechnic, 1977–80, and the Royal College of Art, 1981–4. In 1983 he took part in A Frozen Moment at the College’s Print Gallery. In 1984 Hugo gained a conference centre commission from Edward Cullinan Architects. There was a solo show at Lanchester Gallery, Coventry, in 1985. Mythology, religion and science were important in his work, see his exhibition Between Scylla and Charybdis: David Hugo, University of Warwick, 1988, as sculptor-in-residence there. In that year Hugo created the wall sculpture Sensedatum: Hour Glass II, in mixed media, which he gave to the University and took part in the Inaugural Exhibition at Delfina Studios, in east London. He also participated in East End Open Studios, based at Delfina, in 1989.
