Sculptor, draughtsman and photographer, widely known for public art works, notably the Tibetan Peace Gardens adjacent to the Imperial War Museum, 1997, opened by His Holiness The Dalai Lama. Horsley was born in New Zealand, studying there at Canterbury University Art School, 1969–70. Moved to London in the mid-1970s, graduating first-class from the City & Guilds of London Art School, 1979, gaining his master’s at the Royal College of Art, 1982–6. His career mixed intensely concentrated work, sometimes on a smaller scale, and extensive travels, specifically in India, China and Tibet. Awards included Madame Tussaud’s Sculpture Award, 1978; City & Guilds Sculpture Prize, 1979; Henry Moore Foundation Study Bursary, 1985; and a Barings Bank Travel Award, 1990.
