Painter, born in Hertfordshire, who gained a bachelor’s degree in fine art at Newcastle Polytechnic, 1985–8, and her master’s at Glasgow School of Art, 1992–4. Was included in New Art in Scotland, at CCA, Glasgow, 1994; Swarm, a Scottish Arts Council touring show, 1995; and New Contemporaries at Tate Gallery, Liverpool, and Camden Arts Centre, 1996. Solo shows included Tramway, Glasgow, and Andrew Mummery, both 1996; artconnexion, Nice, and Galerie Isabella Kacprzak, Berlin, both 1997; and Galleria Raffaella, Cortese, Milan, 1998. In 2002, Hopkins, who settled in Glasgow, received a Creative Scotland Award which enabled her to research and produce work for her 2003 show at Andrew Mummery Gallery. In this she “reshaped the surface of things: consciously interweaving paint into and out of a pre-existing object, evolving it into something entirely new, while at he same time retaining the resonance of what lies beneath….
