Painter, etcher and teacher, older brother of the artist Alfred Hackney, born in Stainforth, Yorkshire. He was an apprentice engraver in the Potteries, studying with Reginald Haggar at Burslem School of Art, Stoke-on-Trent, then Royal College of Art with Robert Austin, winning a travelling scholarship. Went on to be head of department at West Surrey College of Art and Design, Farnham, 1950–86. He was a member of RWS, being vice-president, 1973–6, and of RE, also showing at RA and widely elsewhere in Britain and abroad. Victoria & Albert Museum, Ashmolean Museum in Oxford and many other collections hold examples. Lived in Tongham, Farnham, Surrey.
