Hugh Gurney painted on commission for collectors in the UK and in several other countries. He usually painted in acrylics on board and most of his works were seascapes or landscapes. He is known particularly for views of the rivers, streams, wooded valleys and hills of Exmoor in the west of England. Entirely self-taught in his early life, he became a very popular teacher of painting.
