The artist was born in Doncaster on 10th May 1849 and died in Peterborough on 19th July 1930. His middle name was spelled Holdbrook (and not Holbrook, as printed in his obituary in the 'Peterborough Standard' of Friday 25th July 1930). It also appeared as Holdbrook in several census returns carrying his own signature. He is buried in Broadway Cemetery, Peterborough, where the Holbrook spelling also appears on his headstone.
