Painter with an interest in sculpture, and teacher, born in Powys. Studied at Cardiff College of Art, 1971–2 and 1974–6, Sheffield Polytechnic, 1972–3, and Chelsea School of Art, 1976–7. Groom’s abstract pictures carefully balanced the volumes of each unit in a work. He was meticulous about surface. He was included in John Moores Liverpool Exhibition, 1987, and in the South Bank Centre’s 1988–9 survey The Presence of Painting. His first solo show was at Riverside Studios, 1978. Other exhibitions included Rochdale Art Gallery, 1983, Ruth Siegel Gallery in New York, 1985, and Nicola Jacobs Gallery, 1986. For some years he was fellow in painting at Gloucester College of Art and Design, Cheltenham. Arts Council holds his work.
