Painter, stained glass artist, theatre designer and teacher, born in Ayr, Scotland. Studied at Glasgow School of Art, 1928, and Edinburgh College of Art, 1929–31, where his teachers included William Gillies. Moved to South Africa where from 1932–7 taught at Johannesburg Technical College and created window designs for cathedrals in Pretoria and Johannesburg. Studied at École des Beaux-Arts, 1938–40, in Paris; during World War II was an instructor in camouflage; studying at Slade School of Fine Art in 1945, his teachers including Randolph Schwabe. Travelled throughout the world, but found time to design for the theatre; exhibiting, mainly at Mall Galleries; and was for some years president of ROI. South Africa House in London has carpet designed by him and his work is in the collection of HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.
