Painter and teacher, born in Calcutta, India. He attended Camberwell School of Art, 1967–8, Slade School of Fine Art, 1968–73. Gopal-Chowdhury began lecturing at Chelsea School of Art and obtained a Boise Travelling Scholarship and French Government Scholarship, 1973–4; between 1975–7 lectured at Leeds University, where he was awarded a Gregory Fellowship, and Byam Shaw School of Art; and in 1983–4 was artist-in-residence at Gonville and Caius College and Kettle’s Yard Gallery, Cambridge. Took part in many group exhibitions, including British Painting ’74, Hayward Gallery, 1974; Hayward Annual and Summer Show 3, Serpentine Gallery, both 1979; A Taste of British Art Today, Brussels, 1981; RA Summer Exhibition, 1988, invited artist; and Different Landscapes, Art Space Gallery, 2003.
