Painter and printmaker, born in Leipzig, Germany, where she began her studies in 1914. Between 1920–3 she was a master pupil of Oskar Kokoschka at Dresden Academy. From 1923–32 she travelled to New York, Paris, the south of France, Italy and then returned to Germany where she had a first solo exhibition at Gallery Caspari, Munich, in 1932. Settled in Kitzbuehel in 1933, the Tyrolean scenery being an inspiration. Fearing a Nazi threat, in 1939 she moved with her mother to London, settling at Langdale, Westmorland, in 1942. She lived by making fur and leather goods, continued to paint and befriended the artist Kurt Schwitters. During her time there her lyrical Expressionist style became more structured. Always figurative, her pictures were richly coloured, sometimes symbolic and very moving.
