Jean Gibson (1927–1991) was born in Stoke-on-Trent and studied at Wimbledon School of Art following which she graduated with first class honours and won a travelling scholarship from the Royal College of Art (1950–1954). She became member of the London Group in 1987 and exhibited regularly from the 60’s until her death in 1991. Solo exhibitions included Leicester Galleries (1968/1969), Oxford Gallery (1974), Nicola Jacobs Gallery (1981), Oriel Gallery, Cardiff (1985), Lynne Stern Associates (1991) and The Redfern Gallery (1994). She took part in many group exhibitions, including RA Summer Exhibitions (1978–1991), Jillian Jason Gallery (1990) amongst many others. Commissions included Commonwealth Institute, 1967; P&O Lines, for the Oriana, 1969; Record Industry Awards, 1975–1978; Tel-Aviv Museum, Israel, 1976; and Cecil Denny Highton Group of Architects, 1982.
Gibson lived in London and was married to the painter Anthony Whishaw RA.
She was also an inspirational sculpture teacher and gave lessons in her studio in Kensington.
Her protégés will always include her in any commentary on their trajectory as a artist. Each started their experience in clay in her studio between the late 1960s and 1980s.
