Artist and teacher whose output included vibrant paintings as well as witty and atmospheric wood engravings, good examples of which appeared in Wood Engravings by Jonathan Gibbs, published by Open Eye Gallery, Edinburgh, 1999, when he had a solo show there. Gibbs gained a first-class honours degree at the Central School of Art & Design, 1972–6; a higher diploma in fine art from Slade School of Fine Art, 1976–8; with a Cheltenham Painting Fellowship (Boise Travelling Scholarship to Italy), 1978–9. During 1979–90, Gibbs taught part-time at Gloucestershire College of Arts & Technology and Bath College of Higher Education, while visiting other colleges, from 1990 being lecturer in illustration at Edinburgh College of Art. Awards comprised Stowells Trophy, Winsor & Newton Students Exhibition and Robert Colquhoun Memorial Award, Kilmarnock, other group shows including RA Summer Exhibition, RSA, LG and Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh.
