Painter and creator of artworks using found objects, born in Alloa, Clackmannanshire. He studied at Edinburgh College of Art, 1964–8, an Andrew Grant Scholarship permitting him to travel in France and Spain. Docherty gathers found objects, which he paints and which together chronicle his travels. Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art holds an example: An Object Fixed in Time, constructed in 1977. He was in the Gallery’s exhibition Scottish Art since 1900, 1989–90, which toured; Docherty’s first solo show was in 1970 at Richard Demarco Gallery, Edinburgh.
