(b Charlottesville, Va., 1 Oct. 1827; d London, 2 Feb. 1854). British painter, closely associated with the Pre-Raphaelites (he was proposed for membership of the Brotherhood, to replace Collinson, but was never actually elected). In 1849 he ‘discovered’ Elizabeth Siddal, the archetypal Pre-Raphaelite model and Rossetti's future wife. Deverell was noted for his good looks and charm and Elizabeth was probably in love with him. He died aged 26 from Bright's disease, leaving only a small number of paintings.
