Sculptor and teacher, born in Warrington, Lancashire, who modelled in clay, cast into a variety of materials. He studied at Liverpool College of Art, 1953–9, under Philip Hartas and George Yoonson, then spent several months at Brera Academy in Milan under Marino Marini. Teaching experience included Bradford and Liverpool Colleges of Art, Red Deer College in Canada and eventually Exeter College of Art, where Dean was head of sculpture. He was also external examiner to many colleges. Dean said that the main influences at the start of his career were Rodin and Germaine Richier, “work concerned with the structure and mechanics of organic forms within a literal framework, dealing with the cycle from birth to death and the regeneration thereafter”.
