Painter and printmaker, born in Northwich, Cheshire, who attended Heybrook School, Rochdale. Crossley was always an experimental artist, who had a deep interest in form and colour tensions and whose pictures, abstract and figurative, had great verve and energy. His early career was in the north of England. After military service in the Royal Air Force, 1941–5, Crossley showed in various exhibitions such as RA, SGA, Paris Salon and Manchester Academy, being elected a member in 1950. In 1959 he moved to St Ives, Cornwall, and London, showing with Penwith Society of Arts, Newlyn Society of Artists, AIA, Piccadilly and Redfern Galleries and elsewhere. Had a solo show at Crane Kalman Gallery, Manchester, 1959, later ones including a retrospective at Penwith Galleries, St Ives, 1992, a post-retrospective there, 1999, and a retrospective at Rochdale Art Gallery, 2004.
