Sculptor, painter and printmaker, born in Manchester, who also created some silverwork and mosaics; full name was Arthur Edward Seán Crampton. Son of the architect Joshua Crampton. Studied at Vittoria School of Art, Birmingham, 1930–3, then Central School of Art there, and in Paris in Fernand Léger’s studio. Commissioned in the 1st Battalion of the London Irish Rifles (London Division) in World War II Crampton saw action in the Western Desert and Italy, winning the Military Cross and George Medal, and had to have a leg amputated. Showed RA, Leicester Gallery, RSA and Alwin Gallery. Taught sculpture for several years in late 1940s at Anglo-French Art Centre, London. Sometimes signed work with his initial only, encircled. Had many solo shows in London and was included in 1st RWA Open Sculpture Exhibition, 1993.
