George James Cowell [commonly known as George J. Cowell] was born in Heydon, near Duxford, Essex, England on 18 May 1861. He was active as a sculptor by the mid-1880s. Nothing has been traced about his training as an artist. He may have been self-taught.
From 1886 to 1914 he exhibited at the Royal Academy in London. He also exhibited at the New Gallery in London; and the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool.
He lived as Ulcombe, Farnham Road, Snape, Suffolk from c.1900. By 1904 he had moved to Snape Watering, Saxmundham, Suffolk. By 1908 he had relocated to Old Cottage, Thorpeness, Leiston, Suffolk where he was still living in 1914.
In 1897 he married the painter Eva Ayerst (1868-1941). He died in Thorpeness, Suffolk in 1933.
