William Hubert Coop [commonly known as Hubert Coop] was born in Olney, Buckinghamshire, England on 8 March 1872. He was raised and educated in Wolverhampton and Birmingham, and after a short spell in business turned to art which he studied at Lincoln School of Art. He subsequently worked as a painter. His subjects often included river and coastal scenes,
In the early years of the twentieth century he moved to North Wales. By 1912 he had relocated to Lowestoft in Norfolk. By the early 1920s he had moved again, this time to Bideford in Devon where he remained for the rest of his life.
Coop exhibited at the Fine Art Society, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Academy and Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours in London; Royal Birmingham Society of Artists; Royal Cambrian Academy in Conwy, Wales; and at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. He was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1895. He died at Goats Hill, Northam, Devon on 14 January 1953.
