Painter, draughtsman, designer, restorer, teacher and collector, born in Dublin, Ireland, as Richard Alexander Charles Cobbe. He studied human anatomy at Oxford University, 1963–7, winning a prize for anatomical drawing, from 1969–72 studying painting restoration at Tate Gallery. He became senior restorer at Birmingham Art Gallery, 1972–6, teaching restoration at Hamilton Kerr Institute, Cambridge University, 1976–81. Cobbe had a series of solo exhibitions: at Maclean Gallery, 1983; Bury Street Gallery, 1985–9; Galerie de Staël, Paris, 1990; Ib Jorgensen Fine Art, Dublin, 1992; Royal Danish Embassy, 1995; The Prince of Wales’ Institute of Architecture, 1996 (accompanied by Creations and Recreations, Alec Cobbe: Thirty Years of Design and Painting, edited by Richard John); and Rafael Valls Ltd, 1999 and 2002.
