Painter who was better known as art critic of The Times and writer of books on painting. He was educated at Eton College and Cambridge University, also studying at Westminster School of Art. Showed at RA, LG and elsewhere. His books include Italian Painting and An Introduction to French Painting. Sometimes signed work only with initials. Was for a time after World War II a National Gallery trustee and from 1955–8 Slade professor of fine art at Cambridge. Lived in Hadleigh, Suffolk, and finally at Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire.
