Sculptor in various materials, but wood-carving was his favourite method of work. Also painted in oils. Born in Silsden, Yorkshire and studied at Keighley School of Art and Royal College of Art, among his teachers being Henry Moore. He was the head of the sculpture department at Sheffield College of Art, 1930–44, then was for over 20 years principal of the Newcastle, Staffordshire, School of Art. Exhibited RA, in Glasgow and Sheffield and has work in Hanley and Newcastle Art Galleries. In his retirement he devoted his time to wood-carvings of birds in foliage and of the human form. Lived in Newcastle.
