Painter, born in Woodford, Essex. He attended Nottingham Art College, 1974–7. Was artist-in-residence at Guildford House, Guildford, in 1983, the year he won Gulbenkian Printmaker Award. Charlton participated in many group exhibitions, including Whitechapel Art Gallery, RA, Bath Festival Show and Thumb Gallery. He had two solo exhibitions at Moira Kelly Fine Art in the early 1980s and later two with Sally Hunter Fine Art, 1985–9. Charlton used a sophisticated technique to create a fantasy world in which archetypal and everyday images coalesced. British Petroleum Ltd, Achim Moeller Ltd and Unilever Ltd own his work.
