Painter, born in London, was married to the artist J B Hiscock. She studied at Kingston School of Art, then Royal College of Art. There her teachers included Carel Weight and Roger de Grey. She won the Princess of Wales Scholarship and British Institution Award and in 1985 was winner of the Three Friends Prize at RA, at which she showed from 1968. Showed at New Grafton Gallery, RMS, RWA and elsewhere and in 1991 shared an exhibition at Llewellyn Alexander. Mary Carter’s work was on a small scale and dealt with daily life in the home and country and portraits. RA holds her work. Lived in Hemyock, Devon.
