Cecil Laurence Burns [also known as C.L. Burn; and as Cecil L. Burns] was born in St. Pancras, Middlesex [now London], England in January 1863 and studied at the Herkomer School in Bushey, Hertfordshire. He taught art at South-West London Polytechnic in the late 1890s and was Principal of Camberwell School of Art and Crafts in Camberwell, London from 1897 to 1899, and Principal of Bombay School of Art in Bombay [now Mumbai], India from 1899 to 1918. Burns exhibited at the Fine Art Society, New English Art Club, New Gallery, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Academy, and Royal Institute of Oil Painters in London; Manchester City Art Gallery; and Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool.
