Artist in oil, gouache and pastel, and teacher, born in Birmingham. He attended the College of Arts and Crafts there, 1959–64, when Gilbert Mason was head of the painting school. Started teaching at local grammar school, then at Droitwich High School, from 1984 being head of design and technology at Stourport-on-Severn High School. In his own work Brookes favoured “a regular change of emphasis which keeps me alert and avoids predictability. I most admire the understatement and contemplative quality of such artists as Morandi and Gwen John.” Was a member of RBSA and an associate of RCamA, other group appearances including Ikon Gallery in Birmingham, RWA, Mall Galleries and Dudley Art Gallery. Had a series of solo shows in Midlands, including Worcester Art Gallery; Bulls Eye Gallery, Lichfield; Compendium Gallery and Midlands Art Centre, both in Birmingham.
