Sculptor and teacher, born in Cape Town, South Africa. Bolus moved to England in 1957 and studied at St Martin’s School of Art, 1958–62. For a time he was an assistant to Anthony Caro, who taught there. In 1963–4 Bolus went back to Cape Town on a visit, having a solo show there in the latter year. In 1965 he had a one-man exhibition at Waddington Galleries, the first of a series, then had a solo show at Kornblee Gallery, New York, in 1966. About this time Bolus was teaching at St Martin’s, also at Central School of Art and Design. Bolus’ work underwent a number of transformations. He was originally a modeller, then a carver rather in the manner of Brancusi, then produced floor-based metal sculptures, abstract and coloured, latterly making grid-style and lattice-form pieces such as he showed in The Condition of Sculpture exhibition at Hayward Gallery in 1975.
