Painter, printmaker and teacher, born in Burnley, Lancashire. He studied art at Lancaster School of Art, where his teachers included Walter Bayes, then at Leeds College of Art. He went on to become, from 1950, acting principal of South Shields School of Art, in County Durham, where he finally lived. Bettany showed extensively in the Lancaster and South Shields areas with various clubs and groups.
