Painter, printmaker, designer and illustrator, son of the artists Edward and Charlotte Bawden, married to the potter Hattie Bawden. He was born at Black Notley, near Braintree, Essex. Bawden attended Chelsea and St Martin’s Schools of Art. During National Service he was able to attend Winchester School of Art, then became a student in the school of engraving and etching at Royal College of Art. As well as exhibiting in numerous mixed shows Bawden had several dozen solo exhibitions. He was a member of RE and of the Society of Designer-Craftsmen and was chairman of the Gainsborough’s House Print Workshop in Sudbury, a group of printmakers. Bawden completed posters for the London Underground, a large mosaic for a swimming pool in Little Dunmow, murals for restaurants, book illustrations and editions of prints for Christie, Curwen and Editions Alecto, and he also decorated his wife’s pottery.
