Painter, draughtsman and noted watercolourist, born in Swansea. He was educated in Newport, Monmouthshire, and spent his life there, studying at the local College of Art, Croydon School of Art and with William Watkins. His career was with British Rail, but his two main preoccupations were painting and the Church of Wales. Barnes was a founder-member, chairman and president of Newport Art and Crafts Society, also exhibiting at NEAC, RA, Royal National Eisteddfod, Paris Salon and elsewhere. CASW holds his work, also Newport Museum & Art Gallery, which in 1997 gave Barnes a retrospective, which concentrated on pictures of Newport, St Woolos’ Cathedral and Christchurch and St John the Baptist, both severely damaged by fire in 1948.
